Gertrud Reemtsma endowed the Foundation in 1989 in memory of her brother, the eminent neurologist and neuropathologist Prof. Dr. Klaus Joachim Zülch. He was the former Director of the Cologne Department of General Neurology at the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research, Frankfurt. The Foundation intends to keep the memory of Klaus Joachim Zülch’s scientific work alive and to honour exceptional achievements in basic and translational research in neuroscience.

The Gertrud Reemtsma Foundation annually awards the International Klaus Joachim Zülch-Prize, one of the most prestigious international prizes in translational neuroscience.
